At the end of last year, and friend and I decided to spontaneously book a 3 day holiday to Spain.
As well as a treat to myself for finally getting a new job, I needed to get away from this miserable weather – even if Spain was only a few degrees warmer.
We were around an hour away from Barcelona in a place called Malgrat de Mar, and around a 10 minute walk from the beach.
If I’m being honest, the town itself wasn’t the greatest. However, our plan was to relax in the hotel’s spa and to take in some fresh air beside the beautiful beach.
Considering we paid around £150 for flights and three nights all inclusive accommodation, we were pretty impressed with the hotel.

The plan for our first day was simple – to fully relax. This meant eating, spa-ing and napping. Which is exactly what we did.
On our second day we decided to take a stroll into the town centre. A few minutes into our walk and we saw some steps to the left of us which obviously led to something but we couldn’t see what. Our curiosity took control and we decided to have a mooch around.
We realised it was a graveyard. But not like the ones we have here. As far as graveyards go, these were actually very pretty and peaceful, although the place was like a maze so you had to retrace your steps to find your way out.

That night we decided to try some proper Spanish tapas. As we wondered around the town, we found the place to be absolutely silent and abandoned. We knew it’d be a bit quiet due to travelling off-peak season, but this was ridiculous! After searching up and down the high street, we finally came across a little tapas restaurant called La Lonja.

The food was great and the prices were even better.
The next day we headed for the beach. The beach was lush. It was so empty but peaceful, and the sun was shining perfectly for us.

As soon as I was stood directly in front of the sea, I sat back and closed my eyes as I listened to the sound of the waves whilst the cool breeze passed me. And even though I was sat by myself on this empty beach, in a totally strange place, I felt totally at peace.

This was exactly what I needed. It was the perfect way to heal my mind which was at that time, clouded by negative thoughts of a job I was totally miserable in and the urge to get away from everything.

But being beside the beach and taking in the energy from the sun, sea and sand instantly lifted my spirits and I was suddenly grateful for booking this holiday so spontaneously.
The walk back to the hotel included a few pleasant surprises, like the marvellously colourful church we came across as we got lost in the winding streets.

This hidden gem was tucked away in between cafes and restaurants, but the brightness of this building meant that everything around it faded into the background.
Our last night included having a couple of cocktails whilst sitting beside the pool for one last time.

I thought about how lucky we’d been. Firstly to find such a good holiday deal and secondly, that the weather was amazing considering it was mid November.

And with that last thought, it was time to head off home and prepare to start my new job.
And to top off a relaxing holiday, I witnessed a lovely sunset as we flew through the evening sky.
